Why Journaling Your Battles Is Essential For Finding Freedom From Porn

Recovering from pornography addiction is an ongoing journey. Along the way, you will need many types of support and encouragement – small group, family members, and other trusted people – to keep you focused on your sobriety.

Maybe one of the most overlooked valuable resources is journaling. Rita Milios, LCSW, describes journaling as “a type of expressive writing, where your main goal is not to produce a “product” (story, article, essay, etc.) but instead to simply use the process of putting thoughts and feelings down on paper to help you understand and cope with these thoughts and emotions.”

Health writer Rick Ansorge explained why journaling is so helpful.

“When it comes to addiction, journaling is not only a great way to track your progress and improve motivation; it may even decrease the risk of relapse. Because the act of writing what’s happening and what you’re feeling forces you to think critically and, hopefully, be honest with yourself. It increases your accountability so you may be less likely to use denial, excuse bad behavior or minimize poor decisions and their consequences.”

“What Do I Write About?”

In journaling, there are no rules or requirements. It’s not about how many words you write. It’s simply about putting down your thoughts and feelings at that time.

Some days you may only write a few paragraphs, but other days you may write much more.

Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, punctuation, or even if your thoughts seem to be all over the place. Just write what comes to your mind. Don’t edit yourself. Be open and honest with yourself.

Here are just a few topics you may write about:

  • Your emotions today
  • What triggers you encountered today and how you handled them
  • A scripture verse you’ve been thinking about that encourages you
  • Your thoughts on what was discussed at your Conquer Series small group
  • Your plans for avoiding your triggers
  • Key points you learned in this week’s Conquer Series video
  • Your current strengths and weaknesses
  • Things you are grateful for
  • Your victories and progress in recovery
  • Your hopes and dreams for a porn-free lifestyle

Perspective

Your journal is a great way to watch your progress as you move through your recovery. When you look back on your earlier writings and see how far you’ve come, you will be encouraged to keep moving forward in your sobriety.

You will gain a new perspective in your life and future. It will help you see the trends and patterns in your recovery and how you are moving closer to becoming the man you want to be for yourself and your family.

You will also see the situations where you need to be extra alert to avoid falling into relapse. This awareness is a big step in staying focused on your goal of freedom from porn.

Great Writing Ability Is Not Required

I know what you are probably thinking – “But I’m not a writer”.

Dr. Ted Roberts is the founder of Pure Desire Ministries and the host of the Conquer Series – a powerful series that is helping over one million men find lasting freedom from pornography. He explains,

“You may not be a “writing” guy, but the act of journaling – writing out your thoughts and feelings by hand – is an excellent way to begin the process of renewing your mind.”

He added, “Journaling can provide a new level of insight and awareness to the various urges, triggers, and fantasies you experience throughout the day. It allows you to be present; not just living in the moment, but living life intentionally.”

That said, when we gave guys a blank book and asked them to journal, they struggled with knowing where to begin. To make it easier, we took some of the key tools from the Conquer Series to help men journal their daily battles with the Conquer Series Journal.

In the Conquer Series Journal:

  • We provide a daily bible passage and men are shown how to apply that to their life through the SWORD drill.
  • The men are asked to track how close they are to relapse each day using the FASTER scale.
  • Each week they are given an exercise that ties their journaling back to the Conquer Series video.
  • At the end of the week before the next Conquer Group, they are asked to complete a “Group Check In” and a “Commitment To Change.” These help the men work back through their last week and uncover patterns they’ve identified in their journaling and through the FASTER scale. Their fellow Conquer Group members can then help that person identify what needs to change to keep moving forward in recovery.

To get the most benefit out of your journaling and the Conquer Series DVDs, you should join a Conquer Group. Although it is possible to do the series by yourself, a small group is strongly encouraged. The other men will be a constant encouragement and support for you and will keep you accountable.

Rise To The Challenge

Dr. Roberts noted, “I have to warn you, this will feel vulnerable; you will feel exposed. You may be reluctant to begin the process of journaling, but I cannot stress enough how critical this is to the process of your recovery. Remember, sexual addiction is mainly a brain problem. Studies show that journaling can create new neural pathways that may literally change your brain over time.”

“Trying harder doesn’t work!” said Dr. Roberts.

“It is only through digging deeper and identifying the origin of your behaviors – taking a microscopic look at your thinking, actions, and feelings – that you can change your behaviors…You have to discover the root of the wounds in your life in order to break free from the life connected to that wound. You have to process the wound and journaling is fundamental to this process.”

Pastor Ken Reinford explains why they use the Conquer Series Journal,

“I now see that this book is a necessary investment for the healing journey. We as broken men need the discipline of journaling and seeing the exact steps necessary for our healing, it’s about repetition and creating new habits in our brain, renewing the mind takes time and discipline. We need the Journal!!”

Overcoming pornography will probably require you to do things you are uncomfortable doing – like participating in a small group or journaling. But you cannot be comfortable with doing things the same old way you’ve done them in the past.

You are becoming a new man with a bright future without porn. Don’t let any fears or worries keep you from your goal.
