A new generation of porn addicts is about to flood the Church — are we ready?

By Terry Cu-Unjieng

tedAre we really supposed to buy into the idea that 68% of men in Church watch porn regularly? Could this just be sensational rhetoric? Not according to a national survey among churches. The survey conducted over the past five years revealed that 68 percent of Christian men and 50 percent of pastors view pornography regularly. But even more shocking is that 11-17 year-old boys reported being its greatest users. The Church is in the sexual battle of its life. As these boys become adults, the Church will be flooded with porn addicts. Pastor James Reeves of City On A Hill Church DFW has successfully tackled porn addiction in his church. He warns, “This problem is going to sweep through the Church like a tsunami wave of destruction and we’re not prepared for it”.

A Grassroots Movement for Change

In response to this growing epidemic in the Church, a group of filmmakers took it upon themselves to create a DVD teaching curriculum on sexual purity called the Conquer Series. The Series is the first of its kind to show men how to retrain a brain that’s hooked on porn, using biblical principles and powerful insights. “The shocking statistics were the game-changer for me,” says director, Jeremy Wiles. “So, we spent two years developing a five-hour discipleship curriculum, interviewing top Christian experts on this subject and shooting battle reenactments to illustrate the war that every man faces with sexual temptation. I wanted to give men proven principles on how to find freedom,” adds Wiles.

The team recruited Dr. Ted Roberts, a former U.S. Marine fighter pilot, to be the host of the Conquer Series. As a former Pastor and head of Pure Desire Ministries, Dr. Roberts has counseled men for over 30 years – mainly dealing with pornography issues. “Our goal with the Conquer Series is to give men a battle plan for purity. We’ve got a great tool here that will change lives, but we need pastors to partner with us to fight this battle,” Dr. Roberts said.

The Typical Church Approach Doesn’t Work

According to Dr. Roberts, churches often treat this issue as a moral one, but fail to recognize it’s mainly a brain problem, “We tell men to try harder, pray harder, love Jesus more.” Dr. Roberts adds, “But, what starts off as a moral problem, quickly becomes a brain problem. Telling a man to try harder is only tightening the ‘noose’ of bondage.” Today, science sheds new light on biblical truth regarding strongholds of the mind and how a person becomes enslaved to sin.

A Highjacked Brain

Understanding the brain is pivotal. When a woman is nursing her child and she’s skin-to-skin with her baby, her brain releases a neurochemical called oxytocin, which emotionally bonds her to her child. The same thing happens during sex. God designed oxytocin as the glue for human bonding. During a sexual release, oxytocin, along with other neurochemicals, are released and cause us to emotionally bond with our partner.

When you watch porn these neurochemicals are also released, which bond you to those images. This is why Satan attacks our sexuality so much, because in attacking human sexuality it actually interferes with human bonding.

According to neuropsychologist, Dr. Tim Jennings, “Any type of repetitive behavior will create trails in our brain that are going to fire on an automatic sequence.” The result is years of bondage. This is how 68% of Christian men can love the Lord with all their heart, but be trapped in sexual bondage. The repeated viewing of porn literally changes the physical structure of their brain.

A Process for Pastors to use to Fight Pornography

Wiles is confident the Conquer Series will embolden church leaders to tackle the problem by giving them a high-quality video curriculum and study guide that can be used by leaders in small men’s group meetings. “Pornography is a really tough subject for a lot of pastors to openly confront,” said Wiles. “This cinematic Series will give them confidence that they can restore men using proven Bible-based principles.”

The Conquer Series has been getting a lot of positive feedback. Jason Royalty, a men’s group leader from Springfield, Tennessee, said, “This DVD series has been so helpful to the 15-18 men that meet together for this class. Understanding how God has made us and also understanding the enemy’s tactics has been key to seeing victories in these men’s lives.”

Paul Cole, President of Christian Men’s Network, agrees, “When the Conquer Series begins to be a part of who we are, it will begin to change what we do and who we are as a church.”

The Conquer Series is a 6-disc DVD set, which includes five 1-hour long teaching DVDs and a leader’s DVD. They are currently offering a 14-day money back guarantee, so if you want to see if this is something for you or the men in your church, then here’s a chance to try it risk-free.

The desire for sex and its peripheral pursuits are hardwired into the brain and supplemented by hormones that, for some reason, are more powerful than the Holy Spirit’s ability to sanctify. If Christian teachings were true, then the porn addiction “epidemic” should not exist. The fact that it does belies the fact that the Christian doctrine of sanctification does not match up with reality. No amount of prayer or bible reading are going to automatically wean you from an addiction. Any “victory” you have will be the result of your own hard work and discipline that comes from “putting off” negative life patterns, while also “putting on” positive life patterns. If you want to frame your efforts in a religious context, then that is up to you; however, underlying all the fluff of god-speak and attribution, it all boils down to a cognitive-behavioral plan of action anyone can utilize apart from so-called spiritual help from above.

That’s an interesting thought. I believe obedience and the Holy Spirit work together. It seems that there are those who don’t understand the true value of obedience in Christian practice. It’s not legalism, but rather a critical operator for finding freedom and peace in Christ. To obey when it is most difficult, telling God why you are doing it, because it’s RIGHT, and not just a rope to pull you out of the mud, immediately puts you in fellowship with Him with a feeling of great strength in the Holy Spirit (according to my experience). He rewards us for turning to Him. God won’t put His arm of strength around us without our obedience. That’s the secret to defeating pornography.

wbcook: If our disobedience can thwart God and the Holy Spirit’s power because they are grieved, then we really don’t need them in the first place, and obedience is enough. While a religious mindset certainly lays guilt on a person, and can be a motivator for change, if there is no wave of Jesus’ finger and the lusts go away, as taught in the New Covenant passages of the Old and New Testaments, then it does boil down to legalism, and really has nothing to do with the empowering aspects of the fruit of the Spirit. Oh, yes: If God has a problem with the way we use the machinery he made, the fault lies with the manufacturer, not the machine.

I think it is more complex. The reality is that much of what is being discussed is simply the natural, God created sex drive. For whatever reason, perhaps the wives are too tired, the men are not having natural release from the pressure that naturally builds up. Obviously single men need to have release. That is why there is always talk of “acting out” on a cyclical basis – because the natural sex drive works on cyclical basis. Until this series begins to take God’s creation of the sex drive seriously, they will be confusing generations and heaping burdens on young men.

The reality is that there IS unhealthy sexuality – and that needs to worked on – but it is very different than the cyclical sex drive that must simply be naturally released.

Jack Johnson–I find much truth in your words.

However, there is also the principle of “free will” that the manufacture incorporated into the machine–as you have characterized the ‘human’ in their being. As well, the adversary has full, supernatural access to the world’s ‘practices’ that highly influence the mind’s ability to manage the body and heart. In effect–our exposure to these worldly practices coupled with our willingness to risk putting them into practice results in a barrier being raised in the mind that compromises receiving ‘truth’ of impact on the heart and body, and ultimately the depth of our machine’s spiritual relationship with the manufacturer.

If we affirm there is a ‘spirit’ element to life on earth–and that the practices of the body have a direct impact on the ability of the mind and heart to align with this spirit energy–then it is immaterial whether the machine (human) or manufacturer (God) is responsible. God in His mysterious methodology has firm foundation for instituting this ‘free will’ principle into the machine. I believe part of that purpose is to help equip His machine to be effective in facing the wiles of the world, and probably for purposes beyond our sense of ‘being’ in this world–as well as for our ‘being’ beyond this world.

So back to your premise of anyone having ‘victory’ “will be the result of their own hard work and discipline that comes from “putting off” negative life patterns, while also “putting on” positive life patterns” does resonate with truth. However, it falls short of recognizing–and realizing–the power of the Spirit as also a key force for restoration and reconciliation, as well as the means for fully fulfilling on one’s God-given purpose for our lives on earth–and probably beyond.

We can plow through on our own–we are powerful “beings” made in the image of God–but then we are only ‘in His image’. When we open all of our ‘being’ to a deep relatedness with the manufacturer–then the machine is truly operating fully ‘In His Image’–and this image is undeniably blessed in the eyes of all around. That in itself is a blessing to both the manufacturer and the other machines in one’s presence and life–and the fullest affirmation that one’s machine is making a difference in the lives of others and this world we live in today.

The manufacturer does not weep at the fall of states and institutions–the Father/Son/Holy Ghost cries at the loss of each child ‘to the world.’ And their restoration and reclamation to each of our unique callings in bringing ‘Heaven on Earth’ overcomes all these tragic losses for an eternity. Being in God’s Word serves to display the alternative world from the sinning world view that is the frame of every ‘machines’ being due to the core fall from grace. Allowing the machine to be the forum for battling the world’s deceptions is a brilliant tour de force because it leverages the spirit energies available from within the machine and the manufacturer. Satan will fight this battle on multiple levels till the end of this world’s times–and I can think of no better sentence in the interim till total victory is claimed. This I have faith in–through the Word and Ways of the Lord.

The Christian worldview does match reality–when one lives in that reality. It is thoroughly distinct from the dominant worldview, but not independent of it while we are in it. It is the dance of life–choosing what kind of world we choose to propagate–and then ‘consciously’ dancing the dance in the midst of the competing tunes ringing around us. God does put His ‘laws in _our hearts and minds automatically,’ but our unconscious embracing of the ‘worlds ways/Satan’s deceptions’ weakens our spirit connection step-by-step until the pot begins to boil and we eventually lose touch with God’s lifeline.
Thank God this toolkit gives a means for reclaiming these laws of life–and brings with it the mechanism of fellow ‘beings’ walking together on the path. God never designed us to fight the battles of the world alone–but rather in intimate, God-pleasing communion with like-intended beings under the embrace of God’s Power, Truth and Light.
In the midst of all this–we do live in the face of God’s wave of the hand, both in the Creation of us as His machines/children–as well as His second wave for all of us, sacrificing His proclaimed Son on the cross for all our sins so we may ultimately join Him in the Kingdom of Heaven, free and pure in His eyes. Not all will take up the charge–a temporary pleasure for the adversary–but his and our destinies are pre- and pro-scribed as we choose to act in alignment with His Purposes.
May the Force (Holy Spirit/Great Father) be with you!

Internet porn accelerates the addictive process. Many young men and women viewed magazines but addiction wasn’t as prevalent because you had to go to the edge of town to get a video. Cavemen survived without porn. The biological drive will always be there but we do have brains to rationalize and resist temptations. Let’s start using them instead of making excuses. Internet porn is a craving that doesn’t satisfy, can accelerate into addiction, will cut you off from relationships and isolate you. You will spend money, time and effort on an activity that will not build you as a person. If you wouldn’t do crack or heroin then you should feel the same about porn. Focus on life, friendships, family and God’s principles. It’s not a difficult concept! Thank goodness for efforts like this to educate people about the addictive nature of today’s porn. If you can see the science behind it then you should be making every effort to stay away. It’s common sense like drug education! Porn never made anybody a better person. It’s a selfish pursuit that will take a person down a road that they didn’t think they could go….morality aside, it’s a health and wellness issue. It has the propensity to hook your brain so just stay away. We are losing too many families and marriages to this plague. That doesn’t make the world a better place.
